The Greater Detroit Music Census!

We’re launching the Greater Detroit Music Census, a data-driven project to better understand the realities, needs, and aspirations of the people who make up Detroit’s music community—from artists and venue operators to industry professionals.

The Greater Detroit Music Census is an inclusive, community-driven survey created to better understand the needs, challenges, and economic contributions of the region’s music creators and workers. The results will help inform future funding, workforce development, policy decisions, and industry-support programs aimed at strengthening Detroit’s globally recognized music culture.

The census is open to anyone involved in music in Detroit, including but not limited to:

  • Musicians, vocalists, DJs, bands, ensembles
  • Producers, engineers, songwriters, beatmakers
  • Labels, publishers, managers, agents
  • Venue owners, promoters, live-event professionals
  • Educators, nonprofit leaders, music-tech entrepreneurs

Participants will be asked about their work, revenue streams, challenges, opportunities, and experiences living and creating within the city. All responses are confidential and will be analyzed only in aggregate.

Why the Detroit Music Census Matters

Detroit’s music industry is a major cultural and economic driver. Yet, like many creative industries, it lacks current, reliable data. The census aims to:

  • Map the size and scope of Detroit’s music workforce
  • Identify opportunities for community investment
  • Highlight gaps in resources, equity, and support
  • Support Detroit’s long-term creative-economy strategy
  • Empower policymakers, businesses, and nonprofits with real data

We want this census to be more than a project—it should be a movement. With your participation, we can make sure the data collected truly reflects our community and sets the stage for real change.

We truly appreciate your support with this important initiative!
